Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Chef's Knife

Ingredients

  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • ½ cup white sugar
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 (3.4 ounce packages) instant cheesecake pudding mix
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 2 (9 ounce) prepared pound cake
  • 1 (16 ounce carton) strawberries, sliced
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl, combine heavy cream and white sugar. Use a hand mixer to beat the mixture on medium speed until stiff peaks form, which may take around 3 to 5 minutes. It’s important to achieve a stiffer consistency for the whipped cream, as this will help it hold its shape when layered in the trifle.
  • In another bowl, grab your instant cheesecake pudding mix and pour in the milk. Beat this mixture for about 2 minutes until it thickens. The pudding should have a smooth and creamy texture. Once thickened, gently fold in the sour cream and lemon juice to incorporate those flavors.
  • Next, take your prepared pound cake and slice it into one-inch cubes. This allows for easy layering and ensures that each piece soaks up the lovely cream and pudding.
  • Now it’s time to assemble! In a large trifle bowl (or any glass bowl), start by adding a layer of pound cake cubes at the bottom. Use about a quarter of the cubes, making sure they’re evenly distributed.
  • After you’ve placed the first layer of cake, spoon in a quarter of the pudding mixture, spreading it evenly over the cake layer. This helps create distinct layers, which is key in a good trifle.
  • Next, add a layer of strawberries on top of the pudding. Use about a quarter of the sliced strawberries to create a vibrant layer. The bright red color will stand out beautifully against the creamy pudding.
  • Repeat the layering process three more times: cake, pudding, and strawberries. Make sure to press down gently after each layer to keep everything compact. You want those layers to be distinct and visually appealing when served.
  • Once you’ve reached the top of the bowl, finish with a generous layer of the remaining whipped cream. Spread it to cover the top completely, creating a smooth finish.
  • Garnish the top with the remaining strawberries and fresh blueberries. This final touch adds color and makes the dessert look even more enticing.
  • Cover the trifle with plastic wrap and chill it in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours, or overnight if possible. This chilling time allows the flavors to meld and the layers to set perfectly.
  • When you’re ready to serve, simply scoop into bowls, making sure to capture all those beautiful layers. Enjoy the Patriotic Trifle Dessert with family and friends, and watch as it disappears!

Notes

  • Storage: Keep any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. The layers may start to blend, but it will still be delicious!
  • Freezing: I do not recommend freezing this dessert, as it affects the texture of the whipped cream and pudding.
  • Variations: Feel free to switch out the pound cake for angel food cake for a lighter option.
  • Garnishing: Add some mint leaves for a pop of green if you want extra flair!
  • Pairing: This dessert pairs wonderfully with a light summer salad or grilled meats.
